Breast Cancer Stage 0:-
Off course, early diagnosis can prevent you from developing invasive breast cancer. If precancerous or cancer cells are confined to milk ducts, it is known as noninvasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). It can spread beyond the ducts.
Surgery at Stage 0:-
In the lumpectomy, a surgeon removes cancerous cells and leaves rest of the breast. It is a viable option after confirmation of DCIS to one area of the breast. It means that patient can go home just after surgery, no need of hospitalization at all. It depends on the choice of a patient if she wants to take lumpectomy at home. A mastectomy is the process of breast removal. This procedure is recommended by doctors when DCIS is inaugurated in the whole breast. Reconstruction surgery can be started at the time of Mastectomy or later.
Radiation therapy is recommended after lumpectomy for stage 0 breast cancer. During Radiation therapy procedure high energy, X-Rays come into use to destroy cancer cells so that effect on other parts could not be extended. This therapy may be taken for 5 days per week; it lowers risk of recurrence so it should be taken for 5 to 7 weeks,
Hormone treatment could be prescribed if a patient has the lumpectomy or single Mastectomy in the cases of estrogen receptor –positive (ER+) or Progesterone receptor-Postive (PR+) Breast Cancer. In the case of positive result HER-2 of breast cancer, Trastuzumab (Herceptin) therapy and Tamoxifenare generally prescribed so that risk of developing invasive breast cancer could be shattered. Hormone treatment may not be prescribed in Double Mastectomy for stage 0.
